the viaduct

After a slow start to the day we decided we would take the plunge through the wet weather and drive to Glenfinnan to see the viaduct. It was pouring in Fort William but as we drove the 20 mins up the road the sky lturned from dark grey to light grey which I think might be the Scottish version of the sun coming out. Still we had come prepared and all donned wet weather gear as we walked a kilometre or so up a side road to meet the viaduct. It’s massive and as we walked towards it we saw the train from fort William driving over it. We took way too many photos at different angles and rain slowed to a light drizzle. The autumn walk in the fresh air was lovely. Then we drove two minutes to the Glenfinnan house hotel for lunch. After being slightly stunned by the vast quantities of deer heads and antlers hanging from the walls we managed to regain our composure and order lunch. I had a BLT which had 4 large rashers of bacons with only a passing nod to lettuce and tomato. Still delicious though. We enjoyed the view from the bar out to Loch Shiel. Then we drove over to the small visitor centre and walked down to the loch to see the bonnie prince Charlie monument which stands on the water’s edge. The weather clouded over and the wind whipped up and were cold so it was time to get back in the car and drive home. At the end of our road is Glen Nevis which we hope to explore today but night was closing in so we decided it wasn’t wise to start walking anywhere. This didn’t seem to deter other walkers.
Then it was home to the fire, the heating and some scrambled eggs for dinner!
