Edinburgh

It was a sunny autumn day as we set off into the city of Edinburgh. All being a bit wrecked from the long day of driving yesterday the plan was a quiet day with a bit of walking but not too much, lunch and a look around to get our bearings. We caught the bus into Princes street and started in the gardens. We marvelled at the Scott monument and kept wandering towards the national gallery. We went in and took in a lot of old masters as well as the Scottish collection. This was a gallery for the people. No stupid security. No insistence that you leave your bag and coat at the cloakroom. No ban on photography (except for the Rembrandt self portrait!). It was also chock a block with art. None of this big wall, small artwork nonsense.

We hummed and hawed as we always do when it comes to deciding where to eat but we made what turned out to be an excellent decision by staying at the restaurant at the Gallery. The lamb roast was to die for! After some pottering about choosing some gifts in the shop we emerged into the street. A few things were purchased – SIM card, coat, etc – and we walked into Jenners just to say we had. With our feet and energy flagging we decided that was it for today and walked back down the road to our apartment. I think tomorrow the touristing will really begin.

I am reading these backwards: so, you are in Scotland!! I must tell MrsDrWho, her dad and mum are from Cumnock (I think) The gallery sounds like any we went to in the olden days!!! Very sensible. Very glad you are having a great time.
