what attracted you to the position?

EEEEEKKKKK……the worst question. The obvious answer is: “I want a job”. But in the world of job interviews that isn’t good enough.

Job interviews are a kind of cruel and unusual punishment aren’t they. I say that as someone who had to sit on the other side of the table this morning as part of an interview panel. These interviews were made more awkward by the fact that we were all linked via videoconference. So straight away there was a technological barrier which made it difficult for candidates to easily read our body language and other visual cues. And the set questions….so long and convoluted. You’ve read their written applications but somehow to get the same information across in the interview suddenly becomes really challenging for them. Of course like anything there is an art to it but this morning I just felt really sorry for them all at having to go through such a weird charade.

The only good thing about it was that I could mute my microphone every time I needed to cough. Also, I could wear my jeans because they only saw the top half of me on the screen. So you know….swings and roundabouts.
