Goldmark

In preparation for #blogjune which starts tomorrow I thought I best do a little practice run at the old blog here. I have fallen in love with a piece of music I have never heard before and am now playing. It is the second movement of the violin concerto by Karl Goldmark. He was a 19th century composer who fell out of favour through most of the 20th century. His concerto is just starting to be played again by people like Itzhak Perlman and Joshua Bell among others. It’s a strange piece….no real melodic line like we expect from other Romantic period second movements of concertos…but somehow it totally grabs me and carries through from start to finish. Here’s an early recording by Nathan Milstein. Listen to that amazing sound.
