Whitby

Today was the day for Whitby. We took the scenic route over the moors from Wold Newton, stopping at Goathland on the way. Goathland’s claim to fame is that it was the setting Heartbeat. We stopped at the tea rooms and had tea and a hot buttered tea cake which was scrumptious.
Then it was forward ho to Whitby where we drove straight to the abbey. It is fairly magnificent to say the least.

It was also fairly freezing. My puffy coat coped admirably in the winds sweeping from the North Sea. Still I was pleased to go into the little shop and warm up for a while. Then we were hungry so we drove back down into the town where on the advice of trip advisor we sought out the Humble Pie. I had the best and biggest lamb, rosemary and leek pie with peas, mash and gravy for 5.99. It was served in a enamel bowl and came with a cup of milky tea. It was the best lunch ever and I am still full to bursting 5 hrs later.

Then it was time to walk off our pies. We started with the Captain Cook museum which was excellent and very interesting. Then we took to the cobblestone streets where I did not resist the temptation to buy some jet rings. I also bought a new winter hat with ear flaps. It makes me look bizarre but truly keeps my ears warm. After much more walking and wandering we hopped into the car and drove home via Scarborough. The mist was drawing in and I was very happy to get hem for a cup of tea. Tomorrow – Edinburgh!

Yum that pie looks very delicious. As soon as I saw Whitby I thought: Heartbeat. How exciting to visit Captain Cook’s place. I think it matters not a whit what you look like, as long as you are warm!!
